Public health policy: mandate cancer vaccine for schoolgirls?

A new vaccine from Merck, Gardasil, prevents HPV infection, and thereby prevents cervical cancer, presenting interesting public health policy issues. In Michigan, a woman Republican state senator, Bev Hammerstrom of Temperance, has sponsored the first legislation that would require girls entering the sixth grade to be vaccinated. By supporting comprehensive, universal use of the vaccine before women become sexually active, policies such as this could eliminate cervical cancer from the next generation of women.
